Second Opinion

A medical opinion provided by another physician or other health professional, after a diagnosis or recommendation has already been provided to an individual by a different physician or other health professional. An individual is encouraged to obtain a second opinion in the event a physician or other health professional diagnoses a serious medical condition or recommends surgery.

Second Surgical Opinion

A second opinion provided by another physician or other health professional, after a recommendation for surgery has been made. Many health insurance plans provide coverage for second surgical opinions.

Self-Insured Plan

A self-funded health plan set up by an employer or group of employers to pay the health care costs of their employees. Rather than being funded by an insurance company, the employer puts aside funds to meet the cost of claims. The administration of the plan is often managed by an insurance company or other third party. Due to the risks involved, an organization would need to be very large in order for such a plan to be a viable option.

Short-term Disability

An injury or illness that prevents an individual from working for a period of time.

Short-Term Medical

Health insurance coverage for a designated period of time, usually from 30 days to one year. Often obtained by people in-between jobs.

State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

A program administered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provides matching funds to state health insurance programs for families with children that do not qualify for Medicaid but still have relatively low incomes.

Each state is responsible for enacting and administering its own SCHIP program and the criteria for qualification and benefits vary from state to state.
